what is the difference between communication in Japan and the West?<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"characteristics-of-communication-in-japan\"><span class=\"sme-font-size has-sm-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"sme-text-color has-accent-color-color\">Characteristics of Communication in Japan<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Globally, Japan ranks at the top of high-context cultures.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In extreme cases, typical Japanese communication features can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"box_red_b is-style-sme-ordered-list-circle has-text-color-color has-lightest-grey-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><li><strong>Inductive <\/strong>way of communicating: Conclusions tend to come last, with careful explanations and evidence in front.<\/li><li>Modesty and euphemisms: Modesty is considered a virtue, and <strong>far-fetched, euphemistic expressions are also often used.<\/strong><\/li><li>Importance of cooperation: &#8220;Harmony is respect&#8221; and to <strong>avoid conflicts and confrontations,<\/strong> people tend to be <strong>reluctant to express their differences in opinion.<\/strong><\/li><li>Ability to read air and between the lines: Tend to require listeners to be able to <strong>read air and between the lines and understand the meaning of what is said and not said.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>To borrow the words of Edward T. Hall, an American cultural anthropologist, this concept of communication can also be called &#8220;high-context&#8221; communication.<br><br>As shown in the figure below, other than Japan, Asian countries such as China and Korea, as well as Arab countries, are generally considered to have a strong tendency toward high-context communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cic-us.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-27-at-12.33.21-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1180\"\/><figcaption>Source\uff1a<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tecnolyticscorp.com\/single-post\/2017\/06\/30\/Plans-and-budgets-must-be-in-Low-context-of-communication\" target=\"_blank\">Plans and budgets must be in Low-context of communication<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"characteristics-of-communication-in-the-west\"><span class=\"sme-font-size has-sm-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"sme-text-color has-accent-color-color\">Characteristics of Communication in the West<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If Japan is a high-context country, Europe and the United States represent the exact opposite: low-context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So now let&#8217;s consider 4 of the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of Western-style communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having worked for international and Western organizations in England, France, Switzerland, and the U.S., we believe that the main characteristics of Western communication include the following examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"box_red_b is-style-sme-ordered-list-circle has-text-color-color has-lightest-grey-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><li><strong>Conclusions first: <\/strong>Speak conclusions first, leave reasons and details for later.<\/li><li><strong>Direct expressions: <\/strong>Expressing directly without side-stepping is fundamental<\/li><li><strong>The importance of discussion: <\/strong>It is essential to clarify differences of opinion and discuss thoroughly.<\/li><li><strong>Do not read between the lines: <\/strong>Be logical and seek to understand the words and context in which the listener speaks.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"background-of-the-differences-in-communication-between-japan-and-the-west\"><span class=\"sme-text-color has-accent-color-color\">Background of the differences in communication between Japan and the West<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, there are &#8220;cultural&#8221; differences between Japanese and Western communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To be more specific, they can be attributed to &#8220;language features&#8221; x &#8220;national history&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-high-context\"><span class=\"sme-font-size has-sm-medium-font-size\">What is High Context?\u3000<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-5\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"><span class=\"sme-font-size has-sm-medium-font-size\"><strong>A method of communication that involves a lot of tacit understanding (assumptions, knowledge, culture) and reading between the lines.<\/strong><\/span><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan is one of the most high-context cultures in the world, with a unique historical background that has been shared by a single-ethnic island society for thousands of years since ancient times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of its long history, a common cultural context has been accumulated among the people. In the process, it is thought that language features such as words that change meaning depending on the situation and many of the homonyms have been formed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, over thousands of years of history, the Japanese have developed an ability to essentially breathe &#8220;A-Un&#8221; and read the messages of others without having to say a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-low-context\"><span class=\"sme-font-size has-sm-medium-font-size\">What is Low Context?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-7\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"><span class=\"sme-font-size has-sm-medium-font-size\"><strong>A simple and clear method of communication that can be understood without any prior knowledge or understanding of the culture.<\/strong><\/span><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, the low-context culture of the United States, for example, is only 400 years old and is made up of immigrants from all over the world with different cultures and languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, with a country that can be said as a pot of many races, there is almost no common cultural context like that of the Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, in communication, it was necessary to convey the message to the other party in a simple, clear and concise manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is evident in the language features that have been subdivided and concretized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, \u201c\u898b\u308b(Mi-ru)\u201d is used for see, view, look, regard, and watch while \u201c\u78ba\u8a8d\u3059\u308b(Kakunin-suru)\u201d commonly used for work and can be confirm, verify, identify, track, and check for the same word, depending on the situation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-importance-of-global-communication\"><span class=\"sme-text-color has-accent-color-color\">The importance of global communication<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps what is important is to have an objective understanding of one&#8217;s own culture, and then be willing to understand and accept diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cic-us.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-27-at-1.45.24-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1185\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The structure of Japanese consciousness is very different from that of a Westerners.
